Join us on June 9 for a Webinar on Lead and Maternal Health

Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication that is marked by high blood pressure and high levels of protein in the urine. It affects about 7% of pregnancies in Ghana, which is higher than the global average of ~4.5%, making it one of the leading causes of illness and death for mothers and newborns.

While preeclampsia can have many causes, one major contributor in Ghana is lead exposure. From illegal mining to contaminated cookware and e-waste sites, many everyday environmental factors are putting moms and babies at risk for lead exposure. For pregnant women, high levels of lead in the blood have been linked to serious health problems, including preeclampsia, miscarriage, low birth weight, and developmental issues in babies.
