Why Is This a Concern?
Ground cinnamon is a common household ingredient used in many dishes. Many families may already have cinnamon in their pantries, making it easier to be unknowingly exposed to lead if the product is contaminated. This alert is part of the FDA’s ongoing public health alert for ground cinnamon products that contain high levels of lead. The list will continue to be updated once companies announce a recall of their listed product or if more products are added.
Even small amounts of lead exposure can be harmful, especially to children and pregnant people. Lead affects children’s growth, learning, and behavior. It can also pass from a pregnant person’s bloodstream through the placenta to their unborn baby, and during breastfeeding. Children exposed to lead often do not look or act sick, so it is important that parents take these next steps to protect their family’s health.
