Browning Medical Group (BMG), located in Elko, is a comprehensive healthcare clinic providing services for both children and adults. Formerly known as Slothower Pediatrics, the practice has expanded to include adult care, reflecting its dedication to serving the Elko community across all stages of life.
The NvCLPPP is proud to partner with BMG to expand lead testing in rural Nevada. Through this partnership, we are supporting BMG in several ways:
- Establishing lead testing policies and procedures: We shared sample policies and workflows that BMG customized for their clinic and made suggestions to ensure their policies align with state and federal requirements. Additionally, we provided mini-grant funds to support the implementation of their policies.
- Launching onsite blood lead testing: We loaned a LeadCare II point-of-care testing machine to the clinic. The LeadCare II uses a small capillary blood sample, making testing more accessible, convenient, and gentler for children compared to a venous test. To jumpstart onsite testing, BMG will receive up to 16 testing kits, which include over 750 tests in total.
- Providing educational materials for families: We provided posters, flyers, trifolds, and coloring books to help BMG educate families about lead exposure.
- Reporting all results to the health authority: As part of the grant, BMG reports all blood lead test results to their local health authority. We’re available to assist them with any technical questions related to reporting.
Through these resources, BMG has made a great commitment to public health in Nevada by detecting lead exposure early, educating families on the potential for lead exposure, and strengthening the state’s blood lead surveillance system.
We truly value this partnership and the shared commitment to keeping Nevada’s children healthy and safe from lead exposure.
